Students honoured at annual Freemen and Guilds awards

December 9, 2014

Students are celebrating after receiving awards at West Cheshire College’s annual Freemen and Guilds Award ceremony on 12th November 2014.

The Awards, held at the Guild Hall in Chester, recognised the hard work and achievements of 15 students working in industry and commerce in the North West.

The annual Awards, founded in 1968, represent the historic bond between education and the companies of the Freemen and Guilds, who support the recruitment and training of Apprentices within their trades.

The Freemen and Guilds is made up of 23 companies including the Joiners and Carvers company, Saddles and Curries, Cappers, Pinners, Wierdrawers and Linendrapers and Barber Surgeons, and the Wax and Wallow Chandlers Company.

Hannah Machan, 17, from Ellesmere Port studied Public Services Level 1 at the College alongside her GCSEs at school and was awarded the 14-16 Pre-Apprentice Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Hannah said: “I really enjoyed the course. Learning about the different public services and participating in various activities and assignments, made me really want to come back to College full-time and study Public Services further.

“I am now studying a BTEC Diploma in Public Services and I am looking forward to learning more about the different career paths I can take with this qualification.”

Christopher Thompson, 20, from Chester, completed an Engineering Apprenticeship with leading drinks can manufacturer Ball Packaging and was awarded the Cooper Company Award.

Christopher said: “I really enjoyed the Apprenticeship. I like being in a working environment gaining experience but also learning and earning a qualification at the same time.

“I’m glad that I chose an Apprenticeship rather than going to university. Next year I hope to progress to my HNC Engineering Level 5. ”

West Cheshire College Principal and Chief Executive, Nigel Davies, who presented the awards, said: “Here at the College, we are exceptionally proud of our long standing partnership with the Freemen and Guilds Awards.

“All the winners have worked extremely hard and have been selected out of thousands of students. They are all very inspirational and should be proud of their achievements. I would like to congratulate each and every one of them on their success.”
