Students get head start in retail industry

October 24, 2012

West Cheshire College has launched a new Introduction to Retail course combining a recognised qualification and hands-on experience for anybody looking to get a head start in the industry.

The new Level 1 full-time course covers a range of retail topics to give a taster of the different routes available within the industry,  including retail knowledge, health and safety, as well as sales skills.

Students will gain a NVQ qualification in retail, hands-on experience working in the College shop and will learn key skills to help them get into employment such as CV writing tips.

Pat Koreman, Assistant Manager in Retail at West Cheshire College, said: “The course is aimed at everyone, from a 16 year old looking for the right training for their first job to people looking for a complete career change.

“Getting into retail is a lot harder now than it used to be. It is not a case of just handing in your CV anymore, there is a rigorous interview process. This course means that students can say to employers that they have not only got a recognised qualification but also experience by working in the College shop.”

After completing the Level 1 course, students will have the opportunity to continue onto a Level 2 retail course in their preferred route.

Pat added: “We hope the introduction course will outline the students’ preferred route in the retail industry and they will further their studies in their favourite topic on our specialised Level 2 and 3 courses.

“We offer a range of Level 2 retail courses including fashion retail which covers how to become a personal shopper, as well as visual merchandising s.”

Both the Level 1 Introduction to Retail and the Level 2 Fashion Retail course are currently still recruiting and have limited spaces available.
