Students get a taste of working at MediaCity UK

February 18, 2014

A former technical theatre student from West Cheshire College invited a group of current students from the College for a tour around the BBC at MediaCity UK.

Technical Theatre students had a tour around MediaCity UK which included visiting the set of BBC Breakfast, talking to industry professionals and seeing the Countdown clock

Lisa Clarke, a Production Co-ordinator for Newsround in the BBC’s Manchester base, took a group of 10 Level 3 and HND Technical Theatre students on a tour of the TV and radio studios, meeting media professionals along the way.

The tour included visiting the set of BBC Breakfast, a talk with the Technology Organiser for News North and BBC Radio Manchester, meeting David Cheeseman - the Assistant Editor for the BBC’s North West operations team and a tour around BBC Philharmonic where they hold live orchestra performances.

Angie Berwick, Performing Arts tutor at West Cheshire College, said: “As a vocational College, our courses are designed to provide students with hands-on experience.

“A trip like this shows our students how technical theatre skills are used in a real working environment. The BBC has fantastic facilities so it is a great opportunity to show our students how the technology works here and for them to talk to professionals.

“Our students all really enjoyed it and it was fantastic to see one of our past students working at the BBC – it gives all our current students something to aspire to.”

Dan Williams, 19 from North Wales who is studying HND in Technical Theatre said about the tour: “The trip really opened my eyes to what other career opportunities are out there for me other than theatre. The visit was amazing and I enjoyed talking to the industry professionals and finding out more about their roles.”

West Cheshire College offers part-time courses in a broad range of sectors and are still accepting applications for their January intake.
