Student to make a splash at Commonwealth Games

June 25, 2014

A sports student from West Cheshire College is counting down to the summer of a lifetime as she competes in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Danielle Lowe, 19, from Bebington, Wirral, who has been swimming since the age of nine, took part in gruelling trials to qualify and represent England’s swimming team.

Danielle, who is studying a BTEC Diploma in Sports and Exercise at the College, said: “Doing the trials for the Commonwealth Games was the most exciting race I have ever been part of. It was a great experience as I was competing against people of the highest ability.

“I will be competing in the 400 metres individual medley and the 200 metre breaststroke and I am so excited about it - I know it will be such a fantastic event.”

Previously Danielle has previously competed in the European Junior Olympics and the National Championships and has won so many medals and trophies that they have their own dedicated room in her home.

Danielle said: “I have worked so hard to get to where I am today. I train twice a day, six days a week so I’m delighted all of my hard work has paid off.

“The tutors at the College have been really supportive and have helped make my course as flexible as possible to fit around my swimming commitments.”

Geoff Hilton, Programme Leader for Sport at West Cheshire College, said: “We are so proud of Danielle, she is extremely dedicated to swimming and very talented. We wish her the best of luck for her races and I know everyone at the College will be rooting for her.”
