October 24, 2012

Reality TV and Atomic Kitten star Kerry Katona visited West Cheshire College last week to deliver a speech as part of the College’s Mental Well Being Week.

Kerry was invited to the College by the Student Union to speak to over 400 students about her experiences battling mental health issues in her past including being diagnosed with bi-polar disorder.

Steph Garrett, Assistant Manager in Health and Well Being at West Cheshire College, said: “Kerry’s speech went down really well with the students. She has such an interesting story and really helped to explain and raise awareness about the effects of mental health and the importance of recovery.

“One in four people suffer from mental health problems but as it is not visible, people do not understand it.”

Kerry said: “It was a real pleasure to visit West Cheshire College and share my experiences with students and staff.

“As a bi-polar sufferer I want to raise awareness of mental health problems as so many people do suffer from them, but there is still a stigma around it.

“I wanted to share my story so any individuals know they are not alone and that there is support available for them.”
