High Flying Apprentices win Talent Awards

April 2, 2015

Talented Apprentice Hollie Hughes was awarded the prestigious title of Apprentice of the Year at West Cheshire College’s Apprentice Talent Awards held last night (10 March 2015) as part of the College’s National Apprenticeship Week celebrations (9-13 March 2015).

In recognition of her award, Hollie won a prize worthy of her high flying achievements with a trip to London to visit the iconic 87-storey skyscraper The Shard, as well as a trip on the fastest speed boat along the River Thames.

Hollie, 17, from Eastham, Wirral, who is completing an Engineering Operations Apprenticeship at Vauxhall, said: “I am really shocked and surprised about winning the Apprentice of the Year award and I can’t wait for my trip to London. I wouldn’t have won the award without the support from my tutors. I am very happy and proud!”

Thirteen Apprentices from a range of industry sectors attended the glittering ceremony at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus.

Inspiring guest speakers at the event included Jamie Craig, General Assembly Area Manager at Vauxhall who started his career as an Apprentice and Shauna Craig, a current HR Apprentice at Vauxhall Motors.

Alan Clarke, 19, from Little Sutton, Ellesmere Port won the Apprentice Talent Award in Carpentry and Joinery. He said: “I started my Apprenticeship with Melwood Construction straight after leaving school as the idea of working while learning really suited me.

“I’ve learnt so much from doing my Apprenticeship and I have already asked the company if I can progress onto a HND qualification so I can achieve my career goal of becoming a Site Manager.”

Nigel Davies, Principal and Chief Executive of West Cheshire College, said: “During this special week of celebrations, the College wanted to recognise the individual achievements of our Apprentices.

“We work with local, regional and national employers to deliver Apprenticeship schemes across the region. At West Cheshire College we are so proud to be supporting Apprenticeships, they clearly demonstrate a set of skills which impress employers and the training gives them a successful start to a great career.”
