College is streets ahead

June 13, 2014

Following student interest and demand, a tutor from West Cheshire College has successfully introduced Street Art into many courses at the College.

Since tutor Ian Prewitt started working with students on the popular art form, they have been on trips to Street Art Conventions, worked with artists at the Kurt Festival and have met well known street artists.

Ian Prewitt, Art Tutor at West Cheshire College, said: “About three years ago I had a group of students who were really interested in Street Art.  At the time I knew very little about it so felt that I needed to find out more.

“We’ve since been to a street art convention in Shoreditch, London. Plus we’ve met Pure Evil, a popular street artist who has appeared on TV with Alan Sugar on The Apprentice and we’ve also worked with street artists at the Kurt Festival in Germany.”

Ian has also developed his own street art work which has been exhibited in London, Dublin, Germany and most recently in The Aardvark Gallery in Chester.

Ian added: “I have really enjoyed finding out more about street art and developing my own style. I have really enjoyed creating street art and my enthusiasm has definitely worn off on my students who really enjoy it.”

Kirsty Hughes, 27, from Bromborough, Wirral, who is studying Events, Management and Promotions BTEC Extended Diploma, said: “As part of my course we have covered street art.  I’ve learnt a whole host of new creative skills which I can use to promote many different events.

“I have a Degree in Fine Art so I am quite artistic and it was interesting to learn more about street art. The skills that I have learnt will help me personally to progress with my future aspirations of holding many creative and diverse events and possibly set up my own events company in the future.

“The tutors have been so supportive during my time at the College and I have already benefitted from it as I have been working for singer and entertainer Joe Longthorne designing promotional work for him.”
