College celebrates sporting success

September 11, 2014

West Cheshire College’s Sport department is celebrating after 85 per cent of students have successfully secured Apprenticeships or progressed to higher education.

Students who have started an Apprenticeship or chosen higher education, are developing their careers in a variety of fields including sports coaching, fitness and health, outdoor adventure and teaching.

Carys Harland, 19, from the Wirral, who recently completed a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sports and Leisure, has achieved an Apprenticeship with JM Education and now works alongside schools and colleges across Merseyside and Cheshire.

Carys said: “I have always wanted to be a Teacher and when my tutor put me forward for an Apprenticeship with JM Education, I was over the moon.

“Now I am a Teaching Assistant at Lady Mount Primary School and I love it.

“Every day I apply the skills I learnt at College in the workplace and it’s really helped me adjust to working life.”

Josh McEwan, 19, from Ellesmere Port, has also completed a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sports and Leisure, whilst gaining work experience and working as an Under 12s Coach for the Vauxhall Motors Football Club.

Josh said: “The College helped me gain my placement with the Vauxhall Motor Football Club and I have really enjoyed my time learning and coaching. The experience has helped me decide that coaching is something I want to continue with in the future.

“I have been accepted onto a Sports Development with Coaching Course at Sheffield Hallam University which starts in September. I think both my work experience and the College course helped me during the application process.”

Jason Doggett, Sports Tutor at West Cheshire College, said: “Both Carys and Josh have worked extremely hard and we are delighted they have done so well.

“We design each course around the students’ needs and ambition and it’s great that so many students have progressed on to higher education and working life.”

You can enrol now onto a sports course at West Cheshire College. For more information call the College hotline on 01244 656555, visit or pop into our Ellesmere Port Campus.
