Chester Student named Student of the Year at HE Awards

October 24, 2012

An inspirational student from Chester beat hundreds of other students to win Student of the Year at West Cheshire College’s Higher Education and Professional Awards.

Elizabeth Gerrard, 32, who completed a Foundation Degree in Early Years Practice, was presented with the prestigious award from British swimmer and former Strictly Come Dancing star, Mark Foster.

After being announced as the Student of the Year at the ceremony and once the news and excitement had sunk in, Elizabeth said: “It feels amazing to win the award. I’m shocked, but it’s fantastic. The reason I came to College was to gain additional qualifications and to better myself.”

Elizabeth has faced many challenges and had to suspend her studies at one stage due to illness, but with the help of her tutors, she overcame these hurdles.

Elizabeth said: “I faced many struggles during my time on the course as I was working and studying at the same time and I also had an illness, so I had a lot of things to juggle.

“My advice to anyone looking to go back into education, I would say to go for it, if you really want something, you can achieve it. It’s fun and definitely worthwhile”.

Her tutors nominated her for the award as she had been an inspiration to others due to her determination and hard work.

Course Leader, Vickie Mealey, said: “Elizabeth is a fantastic character who is always willing to help others on her programme, she definitely deserves the award and it has been a pleasure to teach her and I wish her the best of luck for the future.”
