Susan Flynn, 68, from Chester enrolled onto a BTEC Arts Foundation course at the College and during her studies her interest in fashion grew, so she progressed onto ABC Fashion Design diploma course.

Susan said: “Since 2005 I’ve been to Malawi every year and while I have been over there, my interest in sustainable fashion has grown and flourished further whilst studying at West Cheshire College.

“The markets in Malawi sell second-hand clothes and African prints. This inspired me to combine them to create my fashion designs, which will be on display at the fashion show.

“During my visits to Malawi I have set up two sewing groups of 20 women who have made handbags which will be featured and on sale at the fashion show.

“The groups were set up to empower women and give them the opportunity to develop a skill, have the support of other women and an income.”

Before enrolling onto the course Susan, who is now retired, worked for 17 years as a minister at the United Reformed Church and 20 years in social work.

She added: “Doing this course is the total opposite of anything I have done before but I love the creativity of it. My grandmother was a seamstress and my mother was very creative, so I think it is in my blood to be involved in fashion.

“I sell some of my designs in boutiques in Malawi and my aim is to develop my brand further.”

The fashion show is being held at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus, off Sutton Way, on Thursday 25th April at 7.30pm. Tickets can be bought from Angela Pleavin on 01244 656308/

All of the profits from the event will go towards putting two students through tailoring school in Malawi.
