A run of success

April 20, 2012

A group of sports students from West Cheshire College matched the time set by Dame Kelly Holmes for a running challenge.

Students took part in a 500m run up the College’s iconic rotunda with the aim of beating 1:16:27 - half the time of Kelly’s 1000 metres GB record of 2.32.55.

Sports students Jordan Knox, 17, Danielle Erskine, 18, Adam Hall, 18, and Lauren Calvert, 17 all completed the 500m run in the time set by the double Olympic gold medallist when she visited the College last year.

Suzie Hobson, Programme Leader for Sport and FD in Fitness and Health at West Cheshire College, said: “Our students were really excited about taking part in the challenge and had been training for weeks.

“The students were thrilled to match the time set by Dame Kelly Holmes. Many of our sports students are aspiring athletes, so this was a great boost for them.”

The College is hosting several events this year to mark London 2012, in a bid to get more people active and to encourage them to have fun and enjoy participating in sports. Events include visits from Olympians such as high jumper Ben Challenger, as well as taster sessions in a variety of sports including handball, volleyball, table tennis and fencing.
